Slow melt and Spring

We wanted a slow melt -- to keep from flooding -- and we got one. It meant we had to wait for spring to arrive, but today it feels like it finally did.
The kids are taking their STEP tests today, or at least part of them. Mike gets a free school breakfast. They give parents a child-reach auto call the week before, warning you how important these tests are and encouraging the kids to get rest, etc.
It reminds me of wrestling, where to make weight, the kids fast and purge so they can squeeze into the desired weight class. The schools want the kids to binge and sleep so that the tests measure their sleeping ability and nutrition level.
In any case, neither Mike nor Laurie got a whole lot of sleep. Mike taught Laurie some basic jazz pointers on the piano last night, and he was so nice, and she was so enthusiastic, that we didn't have the heart to send them to bed.
We are expecting a visit from our old friend Roger Smallwood. I even vacuumed for the occasion. Imagine that.
